NEW YORK -- A group of students at Cooper Union took over the college president's office Wednesday to protest a decision to begin charging tuition for the first time in at least a century.
At least 50 students took over President Jamshed Bharucha's office on the 7th floor of the school's Foundation Building in Manhattan, according to an email from the group. Once inside, they signed a statement of no confidence in Bharucha, according to posts on Twitter.
Citing a $12 million annual budget deficit, the Cooper Union Board of Trustees announced in April it had decided to scale back the full scholarship it has traditionally awarded all admitted students. Starting in the fall of 2014, new students with the ability to pay will be billed for half the tuition costs, currently $19,000 per semester. Current students won't be affected.
"All the people upstairs and doing these sorts of actions to keep this school free -- we're not fighting for ourselves," senior Aaron Graham told the Village Voice. "We're fighting for future students because we're all already guaranteed the scholarship we've been given."
Cooper Union spokeswoman Claire McCarthy said: "We consider this a peaceful and nonviolent action. Talks with students are ongoing."
A group of students in December occupied the top floor of the Foundation Building for a week in December after rumors that the school's financial problems may lead officials to begin charging tuition.
Victoria Sobel, one of the students occupying the president's office, told HuffPost the group hopes the protest will alter trustees' decision about scholarships. "I'm confident that it will have a large effect," Sobel said.
Sobel said the students haven't barricaded themselves inside the office. The group has not decided how long they will stay, she said. "This is just the beginning" of students' fight against tuition, she vowed.
Cooper Union students planned a 6 p.m. Wednesday demonstration at Cooper Square, which organizers said will be attended by students from several Manhattan colleges.

To close the month of April, and in celebration of my 34th birthday, we embraced the staycation lifestyle and launched our new "Staycation" blog series. For our very first staycation, we have chosen a commercial district in Metro Manila that is very close to our hearts, Bonifacio Global City (BGC). During our staycaton in BGC, we were very fortunate and honored to be hosted by no other than?F1 Hotel Manila, the premier and grandest hotel in BGC.
The LocationThe hotel is centrally located in BGC close to restaurants & cafes, malls and boutiques, activity & recreation centers, and even a hospital. The hotel is also easily accessible from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and several land transportation terminals. What we like the most about BGC is that it is not as crowded as the Central Business Districts of Makati and Ortigas, thus ensuring a relaxing and stress-free staycation.
Checking-In
Upon arrival at F1's ground floor lobby, we were greeted by the hotel's courteous and friendly staff and we were quickly guided to the hotel's front desk for check-in. Being an upscale hotel, F1 takes security and safety of their guests seriously. A key card is issued to checked-in guests, ensuring that only guests have access to the elevators and rooms. After filling-out the requisite guest information sheet, the hotel staff assisted us to our assigned room.
We stayed in a Deluxe King Room on the 10th floor of the hotel, with a view over Bonifacio Highstreet. The room is equipped with an individually controlled air conditioning system and an LCD TV. The room has an elegant and stylish interior, with warm colors and cozy lighting, fine furniture and fixtures. The room is spacious enough to fit a king size bed, a sofa and a work desk. The king-sized bed is the highlight of the room. It is covered with soft white linen, the mattress has the right firmness, and the pillows are very comfortable. We also loved the iPod dock which allowed us to play our favorite tracks inside our room...really making us feel at home.
We were equally impressed by the shower room. It is moderately spacious with enough room to move around. The towels smelled clean and fresh. The toilet was equipped with a bidet, something rarely found in hotels in the Philippines. Shower water pressure was excellent and we loved the rain-shower head. The tiles used on the floor made sure that guests won't slip inside the walk-in shower.
F1 Hotel Manila has three swimming pools located on the third floor of the building where we enjoyed a spectacular overlooking view of the BGC cityscape. To make your swim extra fun, we recommend chilling down with a drink at the Canary Lounge located right beside the pool area.
F1 Hotel Manila's F Restaurant offers a wide array of international food choices catering to different tastes and cultures. From fresh fruits to buttered vegetables, from salads to pastries, from cheeses to jams, from rice to noodles, from bacons to sausages, and from scrambled eggs to omelets, there is definitely something for everyone. Look for the jolly Chef Billy and have a custom omelet made for you. We also enjoyed their refreshing fresh fruit juices. Their coffee is also divine!
F1 Hotel Manila takes pride in having celebrity Chef Sau del Rosario as their Executive Chef. During our staycation, we had the privilege of having lunch with Chef Sau at F Restaurant. Like us, Chef Sau also enjoys travelling. We exchanged travel stories of adventures and misadventures, shared experiences during food trips, and talked about his plans for F1 Hotel Manila. He also gave us a brief introduction about the cuisine in his home province of Pampanga, detailing the history of the development of some of the iconic Kapampangan dishes. We really had a great time with Chef Sau and we are looking forward to his future culinary creations.

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) ? One congressional candidate is a former Republican governor seeking redemption after his career imploded in a public saga involving lies, the Appalachian Trail and an Argentine mistress. His Democratic opponent is a famous comedian's sister who's trying to benefit from her rival's damaged reputation.
In a bizarre campaign that has roiled South Carolina, Mark Sanford and Elizabeth Colbert Busch are in a surprisingly contentious contest for a U.S. House seat in a solidly Republican district that GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney carried by 18 percentage points last year.
Tuesday's special election is for the seat that Republican Tim Scott held until he was appointed to the Senate. The race has been jumbled by expected low turnout, Sanford's past and an aggressive late-in-the-game Democratic ad campaign to exploit it.
If Colbert Busch wins, she instantly will become one of the most endangered Democrats in the 2014 elections. If Sanford wins, it could mark a career turnaround.
Early on, Sanford, a third-term congressman before he was governor, appeared to have a significant edge in the district along the Atlantic coast. He beat back primary challengers with an apology-focused campaign and a plea that voters give him a second chance. But all that changed a few weeks ago with the revelations that his ex-wife had accused him in court documents of trespassing at her home on Super Bowl Sunday.
Sanford disputes that, but has struggled to explain the alleged episode that reminded voters of the 2009 scandal in which he used a story about hiking on the Appalachian Trail to cover up a visit to his then-mistress in Argentina. Sanford avoided impeachment but was censured by the Legislature over state travel expenses he used as part of the affair, and he paid a record ethics fine.
Sanford's campaign has slid since the trespassing allegations surfaced.
National Republicans, already struggling with a poor showing among women voters in last year's presidential election, quickly pulled advertising dollars. In doing that, they abandoned the race and made clear that they didn't think the Republican could recover.
Democrats have tried to take advantage of the moment, sensing an opportunity to gain a seat on GOP turf.
The fundraising arm of House Democrats and Democratic-leaning outside groups aired TV ads assailing Sanford for betraying their trust. After initially declining to make Sanford's dalliance an issue, Colbert Busch changed course last week, telling voters during a televised debate that Sanford used taxpayer money to "leave the country for personal purpose."
Sanford's past has generated more than your run-of-the-mill political interest.
A website that promotes adulterous affairs slapped Sanford's image on a highway billboard outside the district, urging people to seek their own "running mate." Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt endorsed Sanford, calling him "America's great sex pioneer." Flynt later complained when the ex-governor refused to accept the endorsement or a $2,600 donation.
South Carolina Republicans are worried.
"The thing that concerns me the most is the outside money that's coming in," said Katon Dawson, a former state Republican chairman. "He doesn't have the heavyweights he's used to having backing him up in the campaign and she does. He's never been in that position before."
Sanford, once considered a potential presidential candidate, twice won the state by leveraging both strategic help from his now ex-wife, Jenny, and a huge bank account that swamped opponents on TV.
Now, he's accusing Democrats of trying to buy the district and complaining about "a million dollars' worth of spending dumped on my head." He's also trying to tie his opponent to U.S. House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California, appearing at events with a cardboard cutout of the former speaker.
"I think Mark's goal was to nationalize the race," said the state's senior senator, Republican Lindsey Graham. "If it's a personality contest, then we could be in trouble. If it's about the direction of the country, who controls the House, I think we'll win."
Despite the spending and his past, Sanford still could win.
He is well-known in the Charleston-area district, having represented most of it for three terms in Congress during the 1990s. In his two races for governor, he won the region by a wide margin and has never lost a political race. A tea party favorite, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, endorsed him last week.
On his final sprint, Sanford is pressing a conservative message.
In Beaufort, where he attended high school, Sanford pledged last week to pare spending. He also projected a command of local issues during a visit to the Chamber of Commerce. He went out of his way to praise hometown hero Candice Glover, a St. Helena Island native who is a contestant on "American Idol."
Sanford made no direct mention of the scandal, and none of his potential constituents asked him about it during a question-and-answer session. He did respond to a question asking him to compare the "Greatest Generation" of World War II with younger Americans today: "I think we can always learn from life ? period. Life is a great teacher ? the ups and the downs of life."
But he directly addressed the scandal only when reporters asked about it.
"Do I have blemishes? Yes. Do we all have blemishes? Yes," he told reporters. "It goes back to what our minister said ... 'Do the events of your life refine or define your life?'"
Colbert (KOHL'-buhrt) Busch is the sister of comedian Stephen Colbert (kohl-BEHR'), the star of Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report." She took a leave of absence from her position as the director of business development for Clemson University's Wind Turbine Drive Testing Facility to run for Congress.
She largely has stuck to issues such as job creation and debt reduction while ads from outside groups pound the former governor.
"We're staying focused on what the district wants," she told reporters after knocking on doors Thursday in a Charleston neighborhood.
Colbert Busch rejected the notion that Pelosi would play a factor in how she would represent the district and said she would be solely focused on the economic needs of the region.
"No one tells me what to do except the people of the 1st Congressional District. That's it," she said.
The race probably will be decided by which side can get more of their core supporters to the polls, which is a difficult feat in a special election.
Republicans note that in a 16-way race in the March 19 GOP primary, Sanford received about 20,000 votes and then picked up about 26,000 votes in a runoff against Curtis Bostic two weeks later. Colbert Busch collected about 16,000 votes in the primary to secure the nomination.
"She's just got a huge challenge," said Andy Brack, a onetime aide to former U.S. Sen. Ernest "Fritz" Hollings, D-S.C., and an unsuccessful candidate himself for the 1st District seat as a Democrat in 2000.
To win, Brack estimated that Colbert Busch would need to get most of the non-Sanford Republican primary vote ? "a Herculean task. But there are some people who are going to vote against Sanford ? and they're just going to come out of the woodwork because of his past troubles."
Dawson said the tough ads could suppress turnout among Republicans disenchanted with Sanford's past.
"Voter turnout is going to be everything," he said.

A couple of months back I received a call from someone who has since become a friend. Sandra Even and her husband Perry had an idea for a painting that was so ambitious she wondered if it was ?crazy.? As I?listened, I tended to agree but thought we should keep talking. It was basically to include ten family members, in period dress, in action, in front of their Spanish style house.
The house, a majestic piece of?architecture?in the Santa Ana hills, was to figure prominently with the people, all family members, positioned in ?candid? ways out in front. The first challenge with that, however, was ?the pool . . . which was right where everyone would need to be.
Assuming we?d figure a way to make it happen, we?determined?the size and the shape of the painting by architectural factors and furniture already in the home. As they?d been dreaming of this idea for some time, the place for the painting had been long reserved. It was to be the jewel in a very beautiful ring.
I figured if we could get a photo, I could make the painting. So they set a date, brought family members in from distant places, located and borrowed early-California garb, and with the help of photographer friends, we arranged the shoot. The idea was for each to be in natural pose, acting in a way that indicated their particular talents or activities. That?s Perry and Sandra bringing in the wine and the bread. Their parents are at a game of cards, a normal activity for them. Via photoshop magic, the group has been pulled out from the house and the pool is gone. For the photo, one dog represented two (again, photoshop).
Here?s the first and easiest step in the painting process . . . getting rid of all that white canvas (in this case, linen).
After the photo, the drawing is the most important step. This one?s in charcoal. Cartoon is the actual word for this stage, though it?s exacting work and there?s nothing ?funny? about it.
This, and the following, show stages of oil paint being applied. At first it took on a sepia look,?reminiscent?of early photography. But the idea was for full color, if somewhat muted, with the ?period? clothing.
The whites of the garb began to add punch as well as a sense of unifying design across the width of painting. Why faces first? Because they are the most challenging and, in a portrait, most important.
Here the figures are all complete, but for some finishing touches. The red dog has been painted in thanks to a photo supplied later, as well as the still life on the table, the card game, etc.
Once a stranger who learned I was a painter asked if I paint houses. ?Yes,? I said, ?though with a very small brush.? Above is one example of such.
By the time I was done, the earth had become brown, the sky bluer, the clouds brighter, the?foliage?fuller, the windows more reflective, a wall-display of crosses added in, and Sandra?s hair more flowing.
Here?s the painting on its day of delivery. Someday it may receive a frame; meantime, it is a piece of lasting pleasure, a ?crazy? idea that worked.
Here?s a quote from Sandra Even following delivery: ?We continue to spend time each evening gazing at our painting. It is profound and very meaningful to us. Those who have seen it are complimentary yet almost without words.?
I?m grateful, and happy that they?re happy.
.
Thanks to the loan of a desert hideaway, we?re off to Tucson for a week of?art-making. Will doubtless be reporting on results of that in an upcoming post.

TORONTO -- For the month of April, Mike Napoli was the hottest hitter for the Red Sox and Clay Buchholz was their best starting pitcher.
Now that it's May, nothing has changed.
Buchholz dominated with seven shutout innings during which he allowed just two hits while Napoli slammed two tape-measure homers and accounted for half the Red Sox' runs in a 10-1 blowout of the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Sox belted five homers -- two from Napoli and one each from Stephen Drew, Daniel Nava and Mike Carp -- to give them 16 homers in five games against the Blue Jays this season. The club has 15 homers in its other 22 games combined.
In five games at Rogers Centre this season, the Sox have scored 36 runs -- and were shut out in one of those games.
Napoli had four RBI on the night, giving him 31 for the season.
Buchholz improved to 6-0 and lowered his ERA to 1.01 for the season. That's the lowest ERA for a Red Sox starter through the first six starts in a season since Roger Clemens had a 0.73 in 1991.
The Jays didn't advance a baserunner past first until Buchholz's final inning when Melky Cabrera singled Adam Lind (walk) to third base. They managed a run off Alex Wilson in the eighth to spoil the shutout bid.
AT A GLANCE
STAR OF THE GAME: Clay Buchholz
Buchholz tossed seven shutout innings and allowed just hits. It wasn't until his final inning of work that the Blue Jays got a baserunner into scoring position as Buchholz improved to 6-0 and lowered his ERA to 1.01.
HONORABLE MENTION: Mike Napoli
Napoli unleashed the power, with two tape-measure homers and a run-scoring double, accounting for 10 total bases and four RBI.
GOAT OF THE GAME: Mark Buehrle
The Toronto starter gave up five hits -- and three of them were homers -- as the Red Sox raced out to a 4-0 lead after four and 8-0 through the seventh, Buehrle's final inning of work.
TURNING POINT: The way Buchholz was cruising, the back-to-back homers by Napoli and Daniel Nava in the top of the fourth made it 4-0 and effectively pushed the game out of reach.
BY THE NUMBERS: With four homers in the first 27 games, Daniel Nava is one homer shy of matching his total for all of last season.
QUOTE OF NOTE: ''Obviously, pretty good.'' -- Mike Napoli, when asked how he bounced back from a four-strikeout night Tuesday night.
