There?s a site along the far west side of Manhattan that lures millions to its meandering walkways and scenic lookouts: the High Line, a converted rail bed that?s now an elevated park. Though less than three years old, the High Line has already become one of the world?s most popular landmarks.

That?s the verdict according to T+L?s first-ever landmarks survey, in which we asked readers to rank contenders in six categories ? and flag the ones they?ve actually traveled to see. We used the latter results to determine the world?s most popular landmarks, a revealing list of longtime favorites and buzzed-about newcomers like the High Line.
A total of five New York landmarks made it into the top 25 most popular list, including the city?s newest public space: the National September 11 Memorial. Remarkably, more than half of those who voted for the memorial in our survey have visited the reflecting pools, which opened only in Fall 2011. ?Hundreds of thousands of visitors from all 50 states and more than 120 countries have come to the National September 11 Memorial,? affirms its president, Joe Daniels. ?The responses from these visitors continue to be overwhelmingly positive.?
Landmarks that have played a significant role in history and that are instantly recognizable symbols naturally pique our travel interest. At No. 5, London?s Big Ben, a clock tower and 13-ton bell, has attracted onlookers since it started counting the minutes in 1859. Rome?s Colosseum is the city's most popular landmark and has given travelers a new reason to visit; below-ground tunnels, where gladiators once prepared for combat, opened to the public in 2010 for the first time in modern history. Perhaps this development helped the Colosseum, No. 6, beat out the best-known structure of the classical world, Greece?s Acropolis, which came in at No. 16.
So which landmark is so popular that it?s been visited by the highest number of T+L readers? None other than Lady Liberty. For the best views of the Statue of Liberty illuminating the Hudson River at twilight, head back to the High Line, which has a straight-on view from the woodsy area next to the 10th Avenue Square.

Unique testbed soon will be in space
ScienceDaily (Feb. 13, 2012) ? New and improved ways for future space travelers to communicate will be tested on the International Space Station after a launch later this year from Japan. The SCaN Testbed, or Space Communications and Navigation Testbed, was designed and built at NASA's Glenn Research Center over the last three years.
The SCaN Testbed will provide an orbiting laboratory on space station for the development of Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology. These systems will allow researchers to conduct a suite of experiments over the next several years, enabling the advancement of a new generation of space communications.
The testbed will be the first space hardware to provide an experimental laboratory to demonstrate many new capabilities, including new communications, networking and navigation techniques that utilize Software Defined Radio technology. The SCaN Testbed includes three such radio devices, each with different capabilities. These devices will be used by researchers to advance this technology over the Testbed's five year planned life in orbit.
"A Software Defined Radio is purposely reconfigured during its lifetime, which makes it unique," says Diane Cifani Malarik, project manager for the SCaN Testbed. This is made possible by software changes that are sent to the device, allowing scientists to use it for a multitude of functions, some of which might not be known before launch. Traditional radio devices cannot be upgraded after launch.
By developing these devices, future space missions will be able to return more scientific information, because new software loads can add new functions or accommodate changing mission needs. New software loads can change the radio's behavior to allow communication with later missions that may use different signals or data formats.
The SCaN Testbed is a complex space laboratory, composed of three SDRs, each with unique capabilities aimed at advancing different aspects of the technology. Two SDRs were developed under cooperative agreements with General Dynamics and Harris Corp., and the third was developed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena, Calif. JPL also provided the five-antenna system on the exterior of the testbed, used to communicate with NASA's orbiting communications relay satellites and NASA ground stations across the United States.
NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md., developed communications software that resides on the JPL SDR.
Glenn led the design, development, integration, test and evaluation effort and provided all the facilities needed to fabricate, assemble and test the SCaN Testbed, including a flight machine shop, large thermal/vacuum chamber, electromagnetic interference testing with reverberant capabilities, a large clean room and multiple antenna ranges, including one inside the clean room.
Glenn also will be the hub of mission operations for the SCaN Testbed, with high-speed ties to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Ala., for real-time command and telemetry interfaces with space station. NASA Johnson Space Center's White Sands Test Facility, Las Cruces, N.M., and Goddard's Wallops Flight Facility, Wallops Island, Va., will provide Space Network and Near Earth Network communications.
The SCaN Testbed will launch to space station on Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency's H-IIB Transfer Vehicle (HTV-3) and be installed by extravehicular robotics to the ExPRESS Logistics Carrier-3 on the exterior truss of space station.
The SCaN Testbed will join other NASA network components to help build capabilities for a new generation of space communications for human exploration.

When organizers announced Wednesday night that the Elfstedentocht ? the Netherlands' mythical Eleven Cities Tour ? would not be staged because the ice was too dangerous, a colleague suggested I skate the waterways that make up the course for a story.
I'm not sure he knew the tour is 125 miles (200 kilometers) long.
I don't even like driving that far.
I was born in Australia. I don't have skating hardwired into my DNA like most Dutch people. I didn't push a chair around a frozen lake as a child the way Dutch kids do to learn how to skate.
But despite all that, I love skating and the fact that I'm terrible at it does not deter me.
Waiting for a long gap between the passing skaters, I step into the middle of the ice and push onwards. I dodge a solid mound of ice in midstream and duck under a bridge only to lose my balance as I hit softer ice (water freezes more slowly under bridges, I'm told). It's like skating through ice cream instead of on ice.
Somehow I manage to stay upright long enough to reach a 90 degree bend to the left. To the right was a lock and ? this can't be right ? a big hole in the ice with a heron staring stoically into the murky depths hoping for a feed.
Like Eskimos and snow, the Dutch have a mini-vocabulary dedicated to iceskating. A hole in the ice is called a "wak", there is a verb ? "klunen" ? for clambering along the river bank in your skates.
Every time I look up, people are cruising by me with both hands behind their backs, dressed aerodynamically in layers of tight-fitting clothes. Many take their hands out from behind their backs to record videos on their mobile phones as they speed through the picture-postcard prettiness.
These people are not going to let a small detail like the Elfstedentocht not being staged spoil their fun.
In fact, many of them say they like the fact that the ice has been meticulously scraped clean by a small army of volunteers in an effort to make it strong enough to stage a race with 16,000 competitors. And because the official race is not on, the pace is easier, the ice not so busy.
"It's a pity it didn't happen, but it's great for skating today for me ? the ice is well prepared and the atmosphere is fantastic," says Ben Nijman, 56, as he warms up in a canalside cafe.
Nijman said it is also safer. "In a tour, everybody is in a hurry, people get impatient."
Almost everybody who passes me on the ice smiles and says "Dag," Dutch for "Hi."
People ask one another for tips ? what's the ice like in Balk? "Garbage." Is this the actual Elfstedentocht route? Yep. There's a camaraderie among the skaters that warms you even on this freezing day.
There was no way I would have finished the course. It would take me at least 12 hours if I were to survive, which I almost certainly would not.
(I once skated 30 kilometers (20 miles) across a frozen lake in the 1990s, but only finished because my wife, who is Dutch, pushed me the last third of the way.)
Associated Press photographer Peter Dejong didn't help, either. His skates ? blades mounted in wood that you strap under regular shoes ? broke within the first five meters (yards). The ancient leather straps had dried out and snapped as soon as he pushed off.
So I went off alone, skating for an hour around and around the beautiful town of Hindeloopen.
I passed an empty stall where competitors in the Elfstedentocht would have stopped to get a card stamped by race officials to prove they'd gotten that far ? one of several such stamping stations. If you reach the finish line in the tour without having picked up all your stamps organizers will not give you the coveted small cross awarded to all finishers.
Eventually, my feet aching and cold, I hobbled off the ice and "kluned" to a cafe where I restored myself with typical Dutch skating fare: pea soup laced with thick slices of smoked sausage and a shot of Berenburg, a spicy gin-like drink that warms all extremities in an instant.
And I start dreaming of taking part in a real Elfstedentocht.

Let's see, do any of these require exotic particle theory?
Synchrotron light source? Uses good old maxwell equations to steer electron beams with magnetic fields to make x-ray radiation...
Super conducting wire? The most viable theory behind cooper pairing is QM electron-phonon interaction which doesn't need any exotic particle theory...
PET? That uses simple radioactive sugar (where glucose is fluoridated with radioactive fluorine-18) and the resulting gamma ray decays are imaged...
Not to say that standard-model exotic particle theory isn't interesting, or doesn't explain certain physical things or certain astrophysical phenomena, but unlike QM, theoretical work on exotic particles has yet to prove economically useful. Century old QM theory on the other hand has helped us design flash memory, lasers, GMR disk drive heads, IC lithographic equipment, and has proven useful for racetrack memory, spintronics, quantum dot memory and maybe some day (economical) quantum computers.
Perhaps the time will come for standard-model sub-atomic theory being a big economic payback, but it hasn't happened yet. This might have a lot to do with the fact that other than the standard Hadrons (proton, neutron), and the electron and photons, and practically invisible neutrino, we don't see much, if any, of the other ones except as cosmic radiation or inside particle accelerators, which means economically they are more of nuisance than something to exploit. Who knows, maybe the even the standard model is wrong and we won't see anything economically useful from this theory on exotic particles, but maybe its sucessor theory. We just don't know yet.
It's easy to overestimate the impact of new theories. I'll wager that most cars today are still designed mostly assuming newtonian dynamics, and even more primitively, they got to the moon with a very low precision value for pi. Someday theories prove their worth, just like QM so it's worth investing, but overstating the case isn't being intellectually honest.
To bring a more understandable analogy to the current audience. If you are a computer programmer, your boss may indirectly use Turing computability theory to claim that it isn't impossible for you to write a program to do what he wants it to do, and perhaps P~NP might be something in the back of your mind when you look for algorithms, but the latest computability theory about NP-intermediate set problems probably doesn't yet have any economic value to anyone (after all, they are still NP problems even if not NP-complete). Might be valueable some day, though...

M.I.A. flips bird during Super Bowl halftime show (AP)
For all the pomp and excess of Madonna's Super Bowl halftime extravaganza a single extended middle finger by guest singer M.I.A. is likely to be the most remembered piece of the show.
The gesture, accompanied by a barely disguised expletive, came during a performance of Madonna's new single, "Give Me All Your Luvin.'" At the end of her lines, M.I.A. appeared to sing "I don't give a (expletive)," although it was hard to hear clearly.
The incident was reminiscent of Janet Jackson's infamous "wardrobe malfunction" eight years ago -- a surprise risque moment in front of tens of millions of unsuspecting viewers. The brief exposure of Jackson's nipple during the 2004 halftime show raised a storm of controversy and put CBS in hot water with the Federal Communications Commission.
The Super Bowl, shown on NBC this year, is routinely viewed by more than 100 million people, the biggest TV event of the year. The screen briefly went blurred after M.I.A.'s gesture in what was a late attempt -- by less than a second -- to cut out the camera shot.
"The NFL hired the talent and produced the halftime show," NBC spokesman Christopher McCloskey said. "Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture and we apologize to our viewers,"
The NFL blamed a failure in NBC's delay system for allowing the gesture to be seen. Spokesman Brian McCarthy said M.I.A. did not do anything similar during rehearsals and the league had no reason to believe she would pull something like that during the actual show.
"The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing, and we apologize to our fans," McCarthy said.
The British singer M.I.A. is best known for her 2007 hit "Paper Planes," a Grammy nominee for record of the year that memorably features a sample of the Clash song, "Straight to Hell." It was featured on the soundtrack to the movie "Slumdog Millionaire."
Madonna had admittedly been nervous about her performance, hoping to position herself as the queen of a new generation of pop stars with an opulent show and a sharp performance that mixed her new release with more familiar songs. She seemed like Roman royalty when muscle-bound men carried her extravagant throne across the football field to the stage for her opening song, "Vogue."
Guests Cee Lo, Nicki Minaj and dance rockers LMFAO also appeared with Madonna. The singing and dancing on "Vogue" was smartly choreographed, as Madonna moved more deliberately -- she is 53 -- but still adroitly. She briefly appeared to stumble at one point while trying to make a step on the stage set, but recovered in time.
She let a tightrope walker make the more acrobatic moves during a performance of "Music."
Madonna carried gold pompons for a performance of her new single. Twitter was alight with questions about the vocals being lip synched or augmented by tapes, particularly during this song.
The best guest was clearly Cee Lo, who joined Madonna for the final song, "Like a Prayer." They were joined by a robed chorus in the show's most soaring performance. With a puff of white smoke, Madonna disappeared down a trap door in the stage, and lights on the field spelled out "World Peace."
The performance was also carried live on SiriusXM Radio, giving Madonna the biggest single audience of her career. For all the elaborate choreography and flashy effects, the finger incident is the more likely headline from the event.
Earlier, Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert offered some pregame patriotism. Shelton and Lambert did a twangy duet on "America the Beautiful" and Clarkson, in a simple black dress, sang "The Star Spangled Banner" without a hitch after last year's performer, Christina Aguilera, flubbed a line.

'Birth defect risk' for diabetics

The risk of birth defects increases four-fold if the pregnant mother has diabetes, researchers say.
The study, published in the journal Diabetologia, analysed data from more than 400,000 pregnancies in the north-east of England.
The risk of defects such as congenital heart disease and spina bifida were increased.
National guidelines already recommend having good control over blood sugar levels before trying to conceive.
Both Type 1 diabetes, which tends to appear in childhood, and Type 2 diabetes, largely as a result of diet, lead to problems controlling the amount of sugar in the blood.
This is known to cause problems in pregnancy, such as birth defects, miscarriage and the baby being overweight due to too much sugar.
There is concern that rising levels of diabetes, particularly Type 2, could make the issue worse.
Researchers at Newcastle University analysed data from 401,149 pregnancies between 1996 and 2008 - 1,677 women had diabetes.
The risk of birth defects went from 19 in every 1,000 births for women without pre-existing diabetes to 72 in every 1,000 births for women with diabetes.
Their report said that sugar levels in the run-up to conception were the "most important" risk factor which could be controlled.
The lead researcher, Dr Ruth Bell from Newcastle University, told the BBC: "Many of these anomalies happen in the first four to six weeks."
She said the number of pregnancies with poor sugar control were "more than we would like".
"It is a problem when the pregnancy is not intended or when people are not aware they need to talk to their doctors before pregnancy," she said.
Guidelines from the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence say women should reduce their blood sugar levels to below 6.1% before trying to have a baby.

Dr Bell said: "The good news is that, with expert help before and during pregnancy, most women with diabetes will have a healthy baby.
"The risk of problems can be reduced by taking extra care to have the best possible glucose control before becoming pregnant."
The charity Diabetes UK funded the study. Its director of research, Dr Iain Frame, said: "We need to get the message out to women with diabetes that if they are considering becoming pregnant, then they should tell their diabetes healthcare team, who will make sure they are aware of planning and what next steps they should be taking.
"It also highlights the importance of using contraception if you are a woman with diabetes who is sexually active but not planning to become pregnant."

11 injured in massive crowd for band LMFAO

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Overwhelming "human gridlock" in Indianapolis' Super Bowl Village was causing police to rethink crowd control Saturday on the eve of the big game.
Eleven people were injured Friday night as an estimated 50,000 people flooded downtown streets for a free outdoor concert by the band LMFAO. Two other people were injured Friday separate from the concert-going group. Indianapolis Public Safety Director Frank Straub said none of the injuries were serious, most involving shortness of breath or scraped knees.
Officials were still tweaking their downtown plan Saturday as they prepared for more concerts and activities before kickoff, and they seemed to be pleased with the early results.
"The crowd, everything is great," Indianapolis Department of Public Safety Capt. Kevin Givens said Saturday night. "We've not having any problems with overcrowding."
The less-favorable weather conditions Saturday might have had something to do with that as mist changed to drizzling rain, with temperatures in the 30s. There was bumper-to-bumper traffic on some streets heading into downtown, but as of 10 p.m., police had not reported any injuries or arrests.
Police made a total of 22 arrests Friday night, mostly for public intoxication. One police car was damaged after concert-goers climbed on top of it to get a better view of the stage.
To make more room for people downtown, police closed down some streets completely and others just to inbound traffic. Additional officers were stationed near Super Bowl Village.
Rumors of stampedes, stage collapses and gunshots abounded on social-networking site Twitter as crowds grew Friday, and Straub said Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officers investigated them all and found no problems. He said reports of officers using pepper spray, Tasers or force of any kind to control the crowd were all false.
Super Bowl Host Committee spokeswoman Dianna Boyce said despite its overwhelming size, the crowd was good-natured and caused few problems.
"It looked like a lot of people having a good time," Boyce said. "When you have 200,000 people, you have to continue to keep everyone safe."
Kaitlyn Blacha of West Lafayette and her friends went downtown to see LMFAO Friday night, but Georgia Street was already so packed that they couldn't even see the stage. She said the crowd trying to get to the stage was mostly young, drunk, college-age kids. In the span of an hour, she was able to move about a block and was pushed from behind several times.
"At times, I was pinned so tightly I didn't even have to hold my body up," Blacha said. "Nobody could turn back. We were just stuck."
About an hour after arriving, she said security officers began ushering crowds down nearby alleys to alleviate some of the pressure on Georgia Street. She went down an alley and tried to return to Super Bowl Village but entrances were blocked off. She and her friends instead headed for a nearby bar.
"I never felt scared for my safety," she said. "It was Friday night and we were going downtown. We got what we deserved."
In preparation for free outdoor concerts from the bands Umphrey's McGee and O.A.R. on Saturday, Straub said between 650 and 700 officers will be on duty in the downtown area, 50 more than originally planned. Officers were prepared to close off access to the Super Bowl Village if crowds became too unruly.
