Too many wildfires caused by gun owners, says Utah governor (+video)

The Dump fire in Utah, touched off by ricocheting bullets sparking dry cheatgrass, became the 20th wildfire this year caused by target shooters. Many states, including Utah, are prevented from imposing emergency gun controls.

Some of the wildfires scorching the West this year were sparked by unusual culprits: Gun owners. Or, more specifically, gun shooters.

As with the Dump fire in Utah, which flared hard enough on Friday to force the evacuation of 1,500 homes and 9,000 people, nearly two dozen conflagrations, officials say, have started accidentally by careless target shooters whose bullet sparks touch off dried-up pinon and wild grasses.

?Now is not a good time to take your gun outside and start shooting in cheat grass that?s tinder dry,? Utah Gov. Gary Herbert said Friday.

While authorities can ban certain fire-related activities when fire risks are high, that?s not true with guns, the carrying and use of which are staunchly protected by state and federal law, including several recent Supreme Court decisions.

?In Utah, for example, a state law prohibits the state from enacting emergency bans on guns, putting Gov. Herbert in a position of instead asking county governments to issue emergency rules for outdoor gun use as wildfire conditions prevail across the West.

In North Carolina, gun rights activists have successfully fought legal battles to make sure governors can?t ban guns during emergencies.

Moves to protect gun owners from emergency gun bans is an emerging front in the national debate over gun rights.

In March, a committee in the Colorado legislature killed a proposed bill that would have restricted the state from banning citizen-carry of guns during an emergency. ?Common sense dictates that in an emergency situation? guns only make things worse,? a witness from the League of Women Voters told Colorado legislators at a hearing.

Recent Supreme Court decisions affirming the right of Americans to arm themselves for protection have played a major role in the changing legal dynamic around the citizenry?s ability to access their guns during emergencies.

The Supreme Court decisions have flipped ?the burden onto the government and legislatures to show why they need to restrict what the court has already said is an individual right,? John Velleco, a spokesman for Gun Owners of American, told the World Net Daily news site.

Authorities now say 20 of Utah?s wildfires this year were started by target shooters, compared to 24 in total last year ? with three months left in the western wildfire season. The Dump fire near Saratoga Springs, Utah, started near a landfill when the spark from a bullet hitting a rock set off a patch of grass, which then quickly spread, fueled by dry conditions and gale-force winds.

Colorado officials are also trying to figure out if the 1,200 acre Lake George wildfire was sparked by a ricocheting bullet.

Although this has been a fairly standard year for wildfires following the massive Texas wildfires in 2011, hundreds of fires have burned and dozens continue to burn in places like Colorado, Arizona, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Hawaii, and New Mexico, where the state?s largest wildfire ever is still smoldering through the Gila National Forest. The Fort Collins fire in Colorado has destroyed nearly 200 homes and caused one death.

Humans, whether accidentally or on purpose, start six times as many fires as lightning in the US every year. Activities such as barbecuing and camping-related fires are often cited as causes of wildfires, while arson or careless disposal of cigarettes also remain problems. Authorities regularly target such activities under emergency wildfire declarations.

When it comes to shooting guns on the tinder-dry western plateaus, though, even local authorities so far have refrained from trying to impose emergency bans on shooting, instead urging gun owners to voluntarily refrain from loading up and heading out to the range.

?Citizens do not surrender their civil rights just because of a natural or man-made disaster,? Alan Gottlieb, the founder of the Second Amendment Foundation, said in support of a lawsuit in North Carolina filed by gun owners after a 2010 snow storm put a gun ban into effect.?

Designer Drugs: Bath Salts in New Hampshire | NH Legal Resource ...

?

No, it?s not the kind you use to soak in the bathtub. Bath salts, an illegal designer drug, has been popping up in headlines all over the nation, and recently in New Hampshire.

Police recently seized more than $100,000 worth of bath salts and other synthetic drugs from a Food Plus grocery store in Plaistow, NH a week ago. Local authorities found the drugs and paraphernalia after responding to a call hearing about a woman behaving oddly on Friday. She admitted to taking the bath salts.

Just like other synthetic drugs, bath salts are especially dangerous to the human body, and if you are arrested for using or distributing these types of drugs, you could face extensive penalties.

What are Bath Salts?

Bath salts are a relatively new drug made illegally by street chemists all over the U.S. Also known as ?Purple Wave,? ?Vanilla Sky,? or ?Bliss? this drug is a type of methylenedioxypyrovalerone or MDPV, causing a number of reactions.

The white powder is sold in small plastic or foil packets. People all over the nation have been arrested for snorting bath salts, injecting them, or mixing in a liquid and swallowing them. The most outrageous report of a possible bath salt user was about a naked man who chewed off the face of a homeless man in Florida.

The reason why people snort bath salts is for the euphoric effect on the brain. A bath salt high overrides the brain?s systems and forces it to release more dopamine. This causes the brain?s pleasure receptors to overload making a user feel very good, i.e. high.

The Results of Bath Salt Abuse

However, ingesting bath salts results in some very serious side effects. Some negative effects include:

  • Agitation
  • Paranoia
  • Hallucinations
  • Chest pain/heart issues
  • Feeling suicidal
  • Increased heart rate
  • Psychosis

Any combination of these effects could have lasting damage to your body and brain. If an individual ingests a large amount of bath salts in a single use, fatal results have often been recorded.

NH Laws Regarding Illegal Substances

Because the drug is so new, bath salts charges are relatively low. The substance has been recently banned in New Hampshire and 37 other states. New Hampshire is serious about distributing and using illegal drugs. If convicted of distributing or using illegal substances such as marijuana, cocaine, or heroine, penalties could include:

  • Jail time (for first offense in distributing this could amount to 30 years)
  • Fines in excess of $100,000
  • A felony conviction
  • Mandatory rehabilitation classes

Bath salts were not previously included as illegal substances in New Hampshire, however, lawmakers are now pushing for maximum penalties for using or distributing this drug.

Vern Buchanan, GOP Rep, Dodges Questions About Ethics Probe (VIDEO)

An influential three-term congressman dodged questions about alleged ethics violations he committed while running for office.

According to CNN, Vern Buchanan is facing allegations that he tried steal money from car dealerships he owned to use for his own political campaigns. He also being accused of attempting to silence a witness --former business partner Sam Kazran--to the alleged finance fraud.

CNN on Saturday attempted to interview him about the allegations, but he remained tight-lipped.

"I wanted to ask you about this deal with Sam Kazran. Did you make him sign this affidavit to try to get him to sign this affidavit with this campaign cash scheme," asked CNN's Drew Griffin.

"No ... I got to get to another meeting, you can call my office," he said.

Griffin followed Buchanan down the hallway, asking more questions about the invesigation, but the congressman repeated: "Just call my office."

Buchanan is in charge of fundraising for the RCCC. He is also one of the richest members of Congress. Last month, an ethics panel found that he may have broken laws in trying to get Kazran to lie to the FEC.

Tracking stem cells in the body

ScienceDaily (June 21, 2012) ? Researchers at the University have developed new methods to track stem cells and further understanding of what happens to them after they have been in the body for a significant period of time.

Stem cells are used to treat conditions such as leukemia and have the potential to treat many more diseases and disorders where patient survival is reliant on organ and tissue donation. Currently, however, it is difficult for medics to establish whether stem cells have survived following transplantation in the body and if they reach their target site or migrate elsewhere.

In order to track stem cells in the body scientists use superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) to 'label' the cells before they are administered into the patient. These particles can be picked up by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and help medics establish if the stem cells reach their intended target. Conditions within the body's cells, however, can lead to the degradation of SPIONs and reduce the ability of MRI scans to pick up on their signal in the long-term.

Scientists at Liverpool are developing methods to visualise SPIONs in the cells before they enter the body to learn where the particles are going within the stem cell and help predict how they might perform once they are inside the body over a long period of time. They are using a photothermal technique, a unique optical imaging system, to improve SPION labelling so that particles survive for longer and have minimal impact on the function of the transplanted cells.

Effective monitoring

Dr Lara Bogart, from the University's Institute of Integrative Biology, said: "Stem cells have the potential to replace and repair damaged tissue to preclude the need for a patient to wait for an organ or tissue transplant. Research is ongoing into how it could be used to treat a wide variety of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, and type one diabetes.

"In order to fully explore this potential, however, more technological developments are needed to understand how stem cells behave in the body after transplantation. If we can't monitor stem cells effectively, it can have serious implications for patient health. Studies have already shown that if cells migrate to the circulatory system, beyond their target organ or tissue site, then it can cause inflammation in the body.

"Labelling stem cells is hugely valuable to tracking their movements in the body, but we need to know more about how the particles used interact with stem cells. Using new imaging systems we can work out their precise location in the cell and how they behave over time. We hope to use this information to improve understanding of the MRI signal that tracks SPIONs once stem cells have been transplanted."
